Motologic Shine At Phillip Island Opening Round Of ASBK

The 2009 World Superbike Championships, held over the weekend at Phillip Island saw an awesome display of riding from the Motologic Racing Team riders.

Sunday’s racing also marked the first round of the Australian Superbike Championship and both Glenn Allerton and Wayne Maxwell proved themselves a force to be reckoned with, circulating in World Championship lap times.

Maxwell took pole in Friday’s qualifying session after flying around the circuit at a blistering pace, recording his fastest lap time as 1:32.815 on lap three.

Current Australian Superbike Champion, Allerton was not to be outdone, breathing down Maxwell’s neck at only .179 behind to qualify 2nd. Motologic Racing owner, Paul Free couldn’t have been happier with the result. “Both Glenn and Wayne rode fantastically. They gave everyone something to think about in qualifying with outstanding lap times. The next closest rider was one second behind Glenn which was quite unbelievable.” Maxwell took full advantage of his pole position in Saturday’s Race 1 to take the win ahead of his team mate Allerton in second. Maxwell also recorded the fastest lap time in Race 1 with a 1:33.298, merely 3 tenths outside the domestic Superbike lap record. “The team have been terrific all through the off season with their continued support and I felt completely comfortable coming into this year joining Glenn on the Superbike. Beginning 2009 with a pole position and a win in Saturday’s race at Phillip Island is fantastic,” said Maxwell. Weather conditions on Sunday proved difficult for the first race where the Hondas came in 3rd (Maxwell) and 4th (Allerton). Paul Free praised the riders’ efforts, saying “they did a great job in the rain, suffering somewhat from a less than ideal wet bike set-up. Glenn and Wayne are generally winners in the rain and although we are disappointed in the points taken from the race, they rode very well.”

The second race gave spectators a treat with Glenn and Wayne pulling away from the pack with clear intentions, ending in a first place for Allerton who also recorded the fastest lap with a 1:33.422.

Wayne took second after a terrific battle with his team mate on their CBR1000RRs, only .011 behind Allerton. The pack remained a sizeable 7.5 seconds behind the pair of Honda’s at the start/finish line.

Allerton was excited to take the race win and is looking forward to continuing the year at the same pace. “The weekend overall was strong for me and winning the second race with those lap times makes me even more determined going into Tasmania. There are only a handful of points between myself and Josh Waters and I’m still confident we can secure the series lead in Round 2.”
“My Dunlop tyres worked superbly all weekend, and I must say a big thanks to the team of people at Motologic for giving myself and Wayne some awesome motorcycles.” Motologic Racing finished the weekend strongly, with Wayne Maxwell in 3rd on 39 points and Glenn Allerton in 2nd on 42 points, the pair trailing Josh Waters in 1st on 43 points. Paul Free said, “With only a handful of points in play for the series lead, Motologic Racing is looking very strong going into Round 2 at Symmons Plains.” Round 2 of the Australian Superbike Championship will be in Tasmania on April 4th and 5th.
